Welcome to our new interns!
The Madin Lab is excited to welcome three new interns from the Research Experience in Marine Sciences (REMS) program!
Ciara Ratum is currently a junior at Hawaiʻi Pacific University studying marine biology and minoring in multimedia studies. Ciara started the REMS program at HIMB in 2017 where she worked on projects focusing on coral larvae settlement preferences. In her free time, she enjoys surfing, diving, ocean photography, and woodworking.
Seaenna Correa-Garcia currently attends California State University but had the opportunity to be part of HIMB’s REMS program since high school. The program initially sparked her passion for not only marine research but how to effectively communicate findings through community outreach and education.
Both Ciara and Seaenna will be using their skills to assist on a fish behavior study in Hanauma Bay. The project will seek to understand if and how fishes and invertebrates respond behaviorally when human activity in their reef home ceases.
Kaci Stokes is currently an undergraduate at UH Mānoa and is a recent graduate of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama. Growing up in Hawaiʻi, she has spent a lot of time outdoors, going to the beach or hiking with her family. Her love for the environment has only grown as she got older leading her to a future career in the conservation field. Currently Kaci is working on annotating grazing halos as part of a larger project to automatically identify halos using machine learning techniques.
We’re happy to have each of our new interns as part of the team. Welcome aboard!
