Ecotourism can unwittingly have significant negative impacts on its environment, particularly in ecologically sensitive, popular destinations such as coral reefs. In other ecosystems, environmental education for tourists has been shown to substantially reduce negative impacts of ecotourism. Our past work in this area has focused on determining how visitor education programs in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park affect visitors’ understanding of the reef environment and conservation issues. While this is not an active area of our research program, it remains of interest.
